The Partnership of Faith and hope
Hebrews 6:11-20 …This hope we have as an anchor of the soul
19 … an anchor of the soul… enters within the veil
Hope is like an anchor, Faith is like a sail. Anchors are for holding our “ground,” and for staying put in stormyseas. Sails move us Forward into the will of God.
Hope is based on things which are from the heavenly realm: God’s Character and heart, His eternal promises to us in Christ, our identity in Him. These never change because they are true in an eternal and secure place.
Faith is our response to hearing the word(s) of God and partnering with Him in bringing His will into the reality of thisworld. The test of faith comes when our journey of faith takes us places we did not expect to travel.
When our hope is anchored in heavenly places, we are free to explore the “impossibilities” which faith often requires without fear that we will become disillusioned, disappointed, and discouraged along the way.
20 …where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us
Ø God’s promises are confirmed to us by His willingness to put His reputation on the line.
We need and make covenants confirmed by promises because our fearful hearts need assurance that we will not be abandoned. The cross is the ultimate proof that God will uphold His part of our love covenant.
Ø Abraham got only a promise from God – no confirmation with anything but an oath
15 And so, having patiently waited, he obtained the promise.
Ø Abraham’s promise of descendants was fulfilled by having just one child
When God does not fulfill His promises to us in the way or timing which we expect, our faith is tested. The faith of those who have a grounded hope survive this test.
- This is the secret which the fathers found – they died not having received the promises
